Portland, Oregon is known for its art galleries, literary and music scenes, and now its thriving gun industry. The city has been a center of firearms manufacturing since the mid 1800s and today there are many businesses producing pistols, rifles, shotguns, and other firearms. Gun targets have long been an important part of Portland's culture and history. The first guns made in Portland were pistols. In 1857 James Walthall built the first handguns in Portland using components he had collected from various vendors across the country. Walthall's pistols were used by police officers in Maine during the American Civil War to shoot down Confederate General Robert E. Lee's horses before they could escape. After the war, Portland became home to two established gunsmiths - Jno Maynard and Rufus King - who designed new handguns for local use. One of these new handguns was the Model 1901 Springfield Rifle which quickly gained popularity among law enforcement officials and Triggermen throughout America due to its accuracy, easy operation,and affordable price tag. While handguns continue to be manufactured in Portland today (particularly for sporting purposes), rifle production moved into high gear around 1930 with the creation of the Model 1903 Springfield Rifle by Browning Arms Company (BAC). This rifle was based on recoil-operated designs pioneered by John Browning himself and was widely adopted by American military forces during World War II as their primary infantry rifle. In 1956 BAC merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company creating one of America's leading firearm manufacturers – while simultaneously leaving behind a legacy of handgun manufacture that continues to this day inPortland. Today there are several thousand employees at BAC’s facilities in Oregon City and Pawtucket – responsible for designing, manufacturing, marketing, sales & distribution worldwide – making them one of America’s most successfulGun Manufacturing companies

Portland, Oregon is an city on the Willamette River in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 553,898 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Oregon and one of its three largest metropolitan areas – with Vancouver and Seattle also possessing large populations – combined. The area now called Portland was first settled by American Indians in 1792 as part of the Rogue River Indian Treaty. The first European to visit what is now Portland was Jean Baptiste Point Ferro, a French trader and explorer who sailed up the river in 1794. In 1826, the United States surveyor John Cushing laid out a road from Salem to Portland on land that he had bought from Chief Joseph—Portland's first white settler. Portland was incorporated as a town on April 15, 1847, when much of what is now Multnomah County became part of the new municipality including parts of what are today Hillsboro and northeast Portland Township. Oregon General Assembly legislation passed on March 3, 1800 established Multnomah County as one district within Oregon Territory; this created separate government for each western half of Oregon Territory (the eastern side being under Washington). On February 15, 1851 US District Judge George Dahlquist ruled that Multnomah County should be divided into two districts: Northwest and Southeast; Dahlquist said this would provide "an orderly division for local purposes." Reno & Gold Hill were incorporated into Reno Township on December 4th 1860 which resulted in Gold Hill becoming part of Hillsboro Township January 1st 1861 due to lack of separation between those townships. As mentioned earlier there wasn't enough separating between Hillsboro and Northeast Portland Township so they both became Hillsboro November 6th 1865 while Northeast Portland township became part ofPortland October 10th 1871 after separate incorporation by vote at a meeting held in tents near Pioneer Courthouse square
Portland, Oregon became a city on December 3, 1853. The site of present-day Portland was chosen because it was the only spot in the area that could be reached by wagon and horseback. The first human habitation in what is now Portland was an Indian village called Cottonwood Creek.
