The musket also became popular among European militaries during the 16th century because it could be easily transported and operated by soldiers on campaign. As time went on, however, refinements were made to improve upon the musket as well as create new variants thereof. One such refinement was the development of pistols which fired small balls instead of large shots like those used in cannons or rifles. Pistol fire required less reloading time than cannon fire so troops could engage targets more effectively from longer ranges thanks to their greater accuracy potential (note: this inaccuracy wasn’t always beneficial). Additionally, pistols could often be quickly converted into rifle form by altering certain pieces including barrels and stocks (a process known as “brazing”). This conversion allowed infantry fighting at close range to switch between handguns and cannons without having to dismount or leave their positions (an advantage not shared by artillery units). In addition to these changes within pistol design, other factors contributed towards their increasing popularity during this period viz.: high demand for munitions due to ongoing hostilities between Europe’s major powers; an increase in knowledge about gunpowder technology leading to improved ammunition quality; social changes leading people To choose self-defense over war1 . As wars continued throughout Europe throughout much of the 18th century – including America’s Revolutionary War – firearms began becoming increasingly important for armies across both countries alike2 .
