Portland began steady growth as an agricultural community during World War II with much development taking place around Milwaukie Avenue and NE 43rd Street (now Interstate 5). Afterward, downtown business areas dominated until new housing developments started popping up throughout Downtown between 1978 and 1984 spearheaded by developer Neil Strauss; this period also saw some significant changes within retail industry includingthe opening of several high-end department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus;[1] many old warehouses were converted into luxury apartments or office buildings during this time frame which has been dubbed Downtown 2K4 phenomenon[2]. Today's skyline features large blocks of residential towers completed or under construction across from MAX light rail stations – one recent example being Aloha Tower (formerly known as JPMorgan Chase Building) – making Portland one of North America’s most Walkable Cities[] Today’s downtown district remains vibrant despite heavy development that has taken place nearby: two recent examples are Pearl District [3] and NW 21st Avenue [4], both home to large concentrations of universities and businesses near urban transportation options like MAX lines 4th Ave./Naito Parkway/Milwaukie Avenue/SW Burnside St., near Pioneer Square Station on Amtrak's Pacific Northwest line In 2016,[5] Forbes magazine put Portland atop their list of “America’s Favorite Cities”[6]. They cited its “vibrant nightlife scene”,[7] its “quality education institutions”,[8] and its close proximity to Washington D.C.– easily accessible via public transportation or drive – all among other factors

Portland, Oregon is a city located in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The population was 565,362 as of the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Oregon and the fourth-largest city in the United States. It is both an agricultural and urban center, with a diverse economy based on manufacturing, services, and tourism. Portland has been called the "City of Roses" for its many roses that are grown throughout the area. The first humans to occupy what is now Portland were American Indians who migrated from what is now Canada during the 17th century. The first European to settle in what is now Portland was Captain James Cook who explored and charted parts of southeastern Oregon in 1770-1771 while on his round trip around Australia. He named one of these areas "Portland" after Prince George's County, Maryland where he had been born some years earlier. The first permanent English settler in what is now Portland was Nicholas Flinders Peto who arrived via ship from England in 1824. He purchase land at Northeast 3rd Avenue and bluffs overlooking Willamette River from Chief Joseph for $800 plus costs associated with building a house there. Peto soon proved himself an able proprietor by developing a canal system which enabled him to export goods upriver to Seattle and other markets without having to leave his property or wait for transport across difficult terrain. In 1829 he sold his holdings east of Willamette River to John McLoughlin for $8500 more than they cost him – this event marks one of the earliest recorded sales of property within present day Portland boundaries! By 1830 over 50% of all settlers living outside Vancouver had come through Port Orchard! During much of its early history Portland was known as Yamhill Head because most people living here spoke British Columbia Miwok dialects until about 1850 when they began learning American Sign Language (ASL).Until recently it was also thought that various aboriginal tribes may have frequented or even lived near present day Portland; however recent excavations have shown this assumption to be unfounded! Oregon City became provisional capital during Mexican–American War due to worries over possible US invasion should Mexico gain control over California; however this never happened and Oregon City reverted back to Mexico City shortly thereafter! Throughout much OF its early years there were intermittent skirmishes between Anglo-Americans (British & Americans) & Pomo Native Americans (Chimpanzees) due largely to misinterpretation or outright misinformation emanating either side about each others' cultural abilities!!! eventual treaties signed led by Governor Isaac Stevens ended hostilities but left unresolved many important issues including: coalingaion rights; water rights; boundary changes along river/country lines etc….. later still various forms of resistance sprang up especially among Lower Puget Sound Paiute Indian tribe members against assimilation into mainstream society
Portland, Oregon was founded on December 3, 1846 by Captain James K. Polk and his exploratory party as the Free States of Oregon. The city is named for General George Washington Morrison, who had led the first U.S. military expedition into Oregon in 1839-40. Portland became a major port and commercial center during its early years, but declined in status after the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. It regained some importance after World War II when it became an important industrial center and host to such notable events as the creation of the United States Air Force Academy and the launching of America's first space probe, Voyager 1
