Pendleton, Oregon is a small town located in the Snake River Valley of Western Oregon. The population was 5,869 as of the 2010 census. Pendleton has been inhabited by humans since at least 3,000 BC. In 1829, US Army Captain John Butterfield and his group of men discovered an Indian village west of Pendleton. The next year, US President Andrew Jackson ordered General Clark to move all the American forces out of western Oregon so that they could focus on retaking California. This order forced the Native Americans to build their own defenses and create a network of trails to warn others if anything were to happen in their area.
