Pendleton, Oregon is a community located in Clackamas County, Oregon. The population was 8,883 at the 2010 census. Pendleton is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Pendleton was founded in 1876 by John Pendleton and his brother-in-law George Vancouver. It became a city in 1909 and has since undergone several name changes including Pendleton Heights and finally Pendleton until its incorporation as a city on December 1, 1937 The town is named for John Wesley Pendleton who arrived in 1846 from Ohio with his family. When he died in 1853, his daughter Mary married Josephine Hardy of Portland. In 1865, Hardy's husband Willoughby built what is now the sawmill on the east side of town which soon became an important center for lumber production. One of the first residents to arrive was Jotham Hodge who came to work at the mill in 1865 after being discharged from military service in California that year. By 1867, there were over 100 people living in Pendleton and it had become one of the most important towns within Clackamas County due to its location near lumber mills and its access to transportation facilities. In 1870, John Wesley Pendleton married Rhoda Marie Johnson and their children moved into their father's house on Third Street where they lived until 1880 when they took up permanent residence in their own home on Fourth Street When John Wesley died childless at age 53 years old, his estate was divided among his four daughters: Rhoda (John Wesley's wife), Emma (who married James Worthy Patton Jr., an attorney from Hillsboro), Carrie (married David Ladd) and Minnie (Married Charles Moody). Each daughter received $1,000 shares of Mr. Wesley's estate which made them joint owners with each other unless one decided to sell her share back to her father before death occurred or she conveyed it directly to her children upon reaching majority age In 1898 during a time when political corruption was rampant throughout Oregon Territory thanks largely to federal funding provided through the Indian Appropriations Act of 1896 which placed responsibility for Indian Affairs within newly created territorial governments rather than local administrations,- much discussed was whether or not Jane Addams would run for office as a Republican candidate against incumbent Democratic Congressman Cornelius Swayne but no decision could be made because Addams refused any personal financial donations from men such as Jay Gould who controlled much of eastern Oregon politics On January 3rd 1897 Mrs Addams addressed citizens assembled at City Hall wearing white gloves while holding up a large bouquet of flowers bearing her personal emblems "I am chosen"
