Pendleton, Oregon is a small town in the Cascades region of the United States. The population was 5,406 at the 2010 census. Pendleton is located in Modoc County on the west side of the Cascades and its elevation is 4,509 ft (1,524 m). It lies southwest of Mount Adams and southeast of Grants Pass. The name Pendleton comes from two early pioneers: Samuel Pendleton and his wife Hannah. They came to Oregon in 1848 with their families and a group of Native Americans. Samuel had been born in England but arrived in America as a young man to explore new land. When he first saw Pendleton Valley, he knew it would be an ideal place to settle because it was open and flat with plenty of water resources. He named the valley after his friend Captain John McLoughlin who had helped him find his way across North America while exploring for gold potential. The first people to live in Pendleton were farmers who raised corn, wheat, cattle, horses, sheep, and hogs. In 1851 Arapaho Chief Joseph Kapp established trade relations with European settlers living near what is now Bendigo on the central coast of Oregon when he sent messengers requesting goods that could not be produced locally such as beads or furs. Pendleton, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. It is located about 25 miles north-northwest of Portland and 50 miles south-southwest of Eugene. Pendleton was founded in 1868 by John Lloyd Pendleton as a ranching community on the east side of the Klamath River. The first post office was established in 1870. In 1903, Pendleton merged with nearby Corvallis to form the city of Corvallis. The population was 27,574 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Pendleton was first settled by Native Americans in the late 19th century. They named it after General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, JosephITahem Wacomack Pendleton, who had been captain general during the Mexican–American War and served as a delegate to Congress from Oregon Territory (now California). Wacomack pendleton ranched there until his death in 1851; his son John took over operations and organized what would become Pendleton into a town. The first post office was established at Bendigo on February 14, 1870, under US mail carrier James Hardship; it operated for six months before being closed because of lack of customers. By 1872 much of what is now Pendleton had been surveyed and laid out by local surveyor George Aitchison; construction on the town began shortly thereafter and continued until 1889 when all but one block were built - this block being dedicated to Stinson Beach resident Mrs Florence Davenport (1863-1927). At that point most growth stopped due to lack of space - however some new businesses did open up such as an opera house which opened in 1895 and later became THE Orpheum Theatre; another early business was Harry's Bazar which opened in 1902 as a general store before becoming an ice cream parlor; both businesses remain extant today with varying degrees of success. In 1905, when Portland became an independent city, it annexed part of Corvallis including nearby Pendleton along with many other smaller towns within its boundaries
