Pendleton, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 54,717 at the 2010 census. Pendleton is the largest city in Multnomah County and the second-largest city in Oregon after Portland. It is also the county seat of Multnomah County. Pendleton's economy depends on its location as a major regional center for transportation, log exports, agricultural production, and manufacturing. The first Europeans to visit Pendleton were traders from British North America who entered Multnomah Valley in 1827 and 1828. By 1839 Captain George Vancouver had charted what is nowMultnomah River valley as part of his Columbia Bay Expedition and named it "Newport." In 1840 Lieutenant John McLoughlin surveyed the area surrounding present day Pendleton and called it "Langara" after his father's home province of New Brunswick (now Canada). In 1851 Colonel William McMurtry founded the town of Langara on private land east of the modern courthouse square which he owned south of what is now SW corner First Avenue NE and NE corner 2nd Street NW. The first store opened in 1861 by Jethro Trowbridge with an oven that heated water to make bread from flour ground from cornmeal sold direct to consumers on a cash basis. In 1862 Alfred Beattie built one ofPortland’s first mills which processed lumber into boards or furniture which was exported all over North America including Liverpool where some pieces were used to build St Paul’s Cathedral . In 1865 Ezra Harding started up a foundry making cast iron products for railways A post office was established at Langara in 1865 when Nancie Moulton opened her general store there The town name changed again to Pendleton on February 5th 1870 when Major General Wm Halsey organized troops stationed at Fort Rice during the war against Mexico In 1880 Edwin Holmes set up a sawmill near what is now SW corner First Ave NE and NE corner 2nd Street NW which became one ofPortland’s leading commercial enterprises . A new courthouse was built between 1890-1892 by local contractor Solomon REBECCARO . In 1893 two families – Mary Cooksey and her husband Rev Geo Cooksey donated land near SE corner 4th Avenue SE for public school purposes ; this parcel would become known as Pioneer Square Today most people think about Pendleton simply as "the City". However under various names such as Beaver Dam or Old Mill Creek Community these neighborhoods have continued their own growth spurt since 2000 despite slight declines seen throughout much of Northwest Oregon due primarily to global economic conditions
There is a long and varied history of gun swivels. Some were simple devices used to rotate the firearms in their stocks, while others were more complicated, designed to allow the user to fire the weapon with both hands while keeping the rifle stable. While all types of firearm stocks could be rotated with a swivel device, rifles and shotguns typically required two separate devices: one for rotating the stock around its vertical axis, and another for rotating it around its horizontals (or vice versa). This difference was due to differences in how guns were supposed to be fired: cannons would shoot rounds that traveled in straight lines, whereas rifles and shotguns relied on trajectories that curved as they travelled downrange. To make up for this problem, many rifle manufacturers developed swivel stocks that allowed users to fire the weapon with either hand. Gunswivels have been around since at least the 1700s, when they first appeared on Spanish frontier warfare handguns. In 1792 an Englishman named John Wilkinson filed a patent for what he called "the Gun-Swivel" – a revolving metal framearm that allowed shooters to keep their right hand free while firing using their left arm. The Wilkinson design quickly became popular on American frontier artillery positions during the 18th century;[1] by 1810 there were over 100 patents related to gunswives being filed worldwide.[2] One of these inventors was James Lovell,[3] who patented his own version of a gunswivel in 1828. However, it wasn't until 1836 that a practical gunswivel finally became available.[4] The original design by George Stephenson included four metal circles bored into an iron armature[5], which could be rotated about an axis perpendicular to its length—in other words, it could be turned into a swivel device. It wasn't until 1888 that reciprocating steel arms began becoming available,[6][7][8] makinggun swivels even more useful than before.
In 1899, a patent was filed for the "Gun Swivel" design by George Washington Carver. The design was based on the existing swivels used in shotguns and pistols. The Gun Swivel consists of an eccentric axle that is attached to a stationary arm or handle. When rotated, the eccentric axle causes the stationary arm or handle to rotate around its own axis which in turn rotates the shotgun or pistol within its magazine or chamber.
Pendleton was founded in 1877 by James Pendleton, an American prospector and miner. The town soon became a thriving mercantile center, with businesses such as the Pendleton Grain Company, the Pendleton Telephone Company, and the Pendleton Fertilizer Company being among the most prominent in Oregon. The town's rich agricultural history is also well documented; during its early years, Pendleton was one of the leading producers of hay and oats in Oregon. In addition to its agricultural pursuits, Pendleton also played an important role in Oregon's early political life. In 1878, when Orson Beauregard took office as governor of Oregon, he temporarily moved his residence from Salem to Portland to avoid conflict with California over land claims. During Beauregard's tenure as governor, Pendleton experienced some significant growth; by 1882, it had reached a population of around 100 people. However, following Beauregard's death in 1883, pendletons declined further until their heyday had passed. From then on until World War II (1939-1945),pendletons progressively lost their status as a vibrant community due to various factors including changing economic conditions and increased competition from other nearby towns. Nevertheless, through its history and today,[2],pendleton has left behind a lasting legacy that helps contribute to its overall stature as a historic community in Oregon.

The town grew rapidly, and by 1860 it had over 1,000 residents. By 1865, the population had reached 3,500 and Pendleton became an important regional center for trade and industry. In 1868, Pendleton was designated as the capital of Oregon Territory; this role would later be filled byPortland. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Pendleton experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location on the main east-west rail line running through Oregon Territory. The town exploded in size during this time with construction of factories, warehouses, schools, churches and other infrastructure projects becoming necessary to support rapid growth. However, during World War I (1914-18), Pendleton's economy went into decline due to hostilities in Europe. After the war ended there was pronounced slackness in economic activity throughout Oregon because of returning soldiers' remittances and depressed prices for goods exported from America. As a result of these factors, Pendleton's population declined slightly between 1920 and 1930 before rebounding slightly during the decade following World War II (1939-1945). In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within the city limits of Pendleton as well as outside of it such as Whatcom County landfill expansion that is creating new neighborhoods within city limits that extend beyond downtown boundaries while also accommodating sprawling agricultural land located further out along Interstate 5 corridors within town limits
