Pendleton is an agricultural town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Snake River at the edge of the Willamette Valley. The population was reported to be over 100,000 in 2010, making it one of the most populous towns in Oregon. The first people to settle in what is now Pendleton were Native Americans who used the area for hunting and fishing. In 1836, when Federalists took control of Oregon from Mexico after Napoleon's Mexican War, they started a process to rename all of Oregon "Oregon Territory". When they received word that Pendleton had applied to become part of this new territory, they decided to give it a try because it would have less competition from other towns in the area. The name "Pendleton" was chosen because it was similar to "Pentagon," which was then a favorite name among American settlers. The town bore its present name (and current boundaries) on July 3rd 1842 when Congress passed legislation naming all counties within Oregon Territorial limits with their original county names: Clark County (northwest), Deschutes County (east), Gilliam County (southwest), Hood County (northeast), Jackson County (southeast) and Multnomah County (south). In 1850, when Washington Territory was created from parts of Idaho and Nevada, Pendleton became part of Washington Territory along with nearby Josephine and Sumner Counties. On February 14th 1854, during the Pierce Administration, Pendleton residents voted overwhelmingly to secede from Washington Territory and form their own independent country called "Oregon." This event is commonly referred to as the Organic Act or reunification vote due to its importance in forming recent United States borders. The early days for Pendleton were difficult due to racism throughout much of America at that time - white men often owned more land than black men and could do whatever they pleased with it without fear of retribution or legal action.
