When the Pendleton Rifle and Pistol Club met in 1881, they were the first gun club in Oregon. The club was organized to promote rifle and pistol shooting on a wide scale. Today, the Pendleton Rifle and Pistol Club enjoys a rich history that goes back over 100 years. The first rifles used by the club were primitive muzzleloading guns dating back to 1868. Many of these rifles were collected by Olin Atherton, who also helped found the Pendleton Rifle and Pistol Club. The early members of the PPC included both men and women, many of whom had served in the Oregon militia during the Civil War. At its inception, the PPC was made up of just 20 people with only three shotguns for ammunition. However, within a few years, there were several hundred members dues-paying members across Oregon! In 1886, deer season began in Oregon and as result, demand for firearms increased significantly. To meet this need, Olin Atherton donated 30 acres of his land near Pendleton to be used for rifle range equipment development and storage facility. This addition allowed the PPC to grow rapidly while still providing opportunities for membership dues payment (as well as allowing potential shooters access to quality firearms). In 1903-04 there was an increase in membership when new buildings were constructed onsite including a clubhouse (later renamed after Olin Atherton) which housed both rifle ranges (which became known as “the green fields”), an agricultural extension building which provided instruction on raising chickens/cattle etc., a library branch which served as meeting room and study area as well as a barber shop where haircuts could be purchased; all while being located adjacent to one another making it easy for shooters to connect with each other irrespective of location or time zone! In 1915-16 improvements were made including construction of two more rifle ranges: one at South Park Mountain Resort near present day Hood River Falls and another at Eagle Lake Recreation Area southwest of Bend; this latter range eventually became known simply as “the eagle” due its likeness to an American Eagle sculpture located outside Buckley Hall at Northern Illinois University.. After World War I ended hostilities among nations broke out once again leading to renewed interest in outdoor activities such as hunting Safari style animals throughout much of America however firearm ownership remained largely restricted to select social groups who enjoyed privilege under government regulation since it was seen necessary for self defense during these times… until finally after decades efforts by individuals like ourselves Gun Owners International Incorporated when we formed our own Society NRA(now NSSF)……………………………………….. Pendleton was founded in 1887 by John Pendleton and his wife, Anna. The town was named for the Pendleton mining claims that were located near the present-day town. In 1899, Pendleton became a city and retains its current name. The first settlers to Pendleton were two families from Illinois, Mr. & Mrs. McNulty, who arrived in 1887. They had married into a family of miners who had been living in what is now Walla Walla County since 1793. The McNullys soon built a log cabin on their farmstead which they continued to live in until 1902 when they moved to Oregon City and lived there until their death in 1924. In 1899, the city of Pendleton was incorporated with a population of 150 residents. This growth can be attributed to the development of transportation within the area which allowed goods and people to move freely between Oregon City and surrounding counties without having to worry about being transported back and forth on horseback or wagon wheels as was common at that time. Today, there are over 20 businesses located within the limits of Pendleton including several banks, numerous small businesses, an elementary school and two hospitals (Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital - now known as Portland Children's Hospital) which make it one of the most vibrant communities in Western Oregon!
Pendleton was founded by the U.S. Army in 1847 as a small town on the east side of the Columbia River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1875 it had become a major commercial center on the west side of the river. In 1907, Pendleton became a city, and in 1916 it absorbed neighboring Bridgeport. In 1924, Pendleton annexed nearby Hecla Township, making it one of the first cities in Oregon to do so. In 1941, Pendleton became an incorporated city and again annexed neighboring Hecla Township.
