By 1860, there were over 1,000 LDS settlers living in Pendleton combined with surrounding townships. In 1861, Don Carlos Chavez bought 640 acres (2 km2) adjacent to what is now Northwest Sixth Avenue between Starkadale Road and Yelverton Road from Jesse Gentry for $5 per acre ($50/km²). Chavez named his ranch El Centro de la Raza (The Center of Race). The Chavez Ranch provided food for local farmers as well as housing for workers on nearby ranches during the early years of area development.
