These were called "turquoise glasses." In 1827, American Colonel Timothy Pickering developed a more advanced design, which became known as the "Pickering lens." It was this lens that allowed people to see clearly in low light conditions. In 1878, American optician Augustus de Morgan designed and produced the first true binoculars, which featured a metal tube with two lenses instead of just one. This new design allowed people to see detail at far distances. By 1890, all major manufacturers had produced binoculars of various types and prices. By 1900, however, only about 20% of Americans ownedbinoculars!

Pendleton was founded in 1847 by James Pendleton and his wife Anna. It served as the trading post for the Rogue River region until 1871, when it became a town. The first school in Pendleton was erected in 1850. The town's first store opened in 1861. In 1907, Pendleton incorporated as a city.
