Pendleton is a town in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. Pendleton has been inhabited by people since the late 1800s and was founded in 1876 as a mining town on the Snake River. It became an agricultural center during the early 1900s and had a large cotton gin and other industry until World War II when the area fell into decline. Afterkelco Mining Company merged with Standard Oil of California in 1944 to form Chevron Corporation, Pendleton began to prosper as an oil refinery and commercial center. However, environmental degradation caused much pollution and social unrest in the 1990s; this led to its slide into poverty after 2000. In recent years it has made progress with redevelopment initiatives The history of Pendleton begins with miners who prospected for gold on Snake River Valley soils before arriving here in 1876. By 1886, over 1,000 men were working at mines near present-day Pendleton including many from Bendigo, Oregon which was then part of Deschutes County. Mines developed along both banks of the Snake River where water flows slowly through canyons creating some of the most fertile ground for goldmining in America due to its lack of modern engineering methods that would later be used elsewhere such as Yosemite National Park. Although no gold was found onsite until 1889 when Samuel Inskeep worked Consolidated Gold Mines (later Judson) claims just upstream from what is now Pendleton he became aware that there could be great wealth hidden under these rocks if only someone would take a chance In January 1891 John Witherspoon organized a group called "The Independent Mine Owners" (TIMOs) to explore potential new sites for mining within reach of his Bendigo home base campground where he owned several hundred acres (2 km²). The first discovery at Whatcom Creek east of today's town included nuggetsBC1/4 size [1] although no money was ever made from this find sheds light on why TIMO failed miserably less than two years later when additional claims were taken adjacent to Whatcom Creek . Congruent with earlier reports by American travelers documenting rich deposits nearby Timothy Hunt formed what is now known as "Hunt’s Party" consisting primarily OF5/8 tonnage cobalt lead ore carriages drawn by 4 horses each about 150 yards long averaging 9 mph (.78 m/sec). With $14 worth of assessable property located around Hunt’s Ford they set out October 10th1891 but soon realized their course would have them entering Indian Territory rather than anywhere close to central Oregon Although Hunt never reached any good veins he did yield more than $4000 dollars worth ($ million today) which helped finance his return trip via stagecoach journey across country ended up costing him his life instead In 1892 David Balfour purchased land southwest of present-day Pendleton from Captain Elisha Stevens for $275US which he farmed until 1903 when he sold it back to Captain Stevens for another $325 US having also staked 100 acres (40 hectares), becoming one half owner with David Balfour himself Balfour named his farm after Mount Balfour located northeastward overlooking what is now downtown Portland while Mount Douglas lay southeastward across Frome Lake renamed Washington Peak following General Gordon Granger who surveyed that watershed while stationed at Fort Wingate opposite Olympia during September 1789–May 3rd1890 . This naming practice continued among various partners throughout ranching era allowing owners greater control over their properties without fear they might accidentally share information or resources inadvertently exposing themselves ..
