Oregon City was founded in 1883 as the city of Portland, Oregon. In 1887, it became the city of Salem. The first shot at a target came from Captain John Teller in Salem on July 4th, 1887. This event is considered to be the beginning of shooting sports in Oregon City. In 1899, the state legislature passed an act authorizing the erection of a Shooting Range within town limits and providing for its use by citizens for hunting purposes only. establishments were erected within three years and trials were held with various types of ammunition. It wasn’t until 1906 that anyone outside of town could shoot at targets using rifle or shotgun rounds without prior permission from village officials. In 1912, local manufacturers pooled their resources to form a national company to produce targets made out of cast iron and other materials used in manufacturing goods such as bicycles and automobiles. Target production continued until 1958 when all nationally produced targets were sent to China due to trade restrictions placed on United States exports during the McCarthy Era (1946-1953). Today there are still many people who participate in target shooting in Oregon City through organizations like “The Arsenal” which provides range instruction, social events for members and occasional tournaments for friends and family alike.
