Oregon City, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of The County of Josephine. It is located on the Columbia River in The State of Oregon. Oregon City was founded on May 17, 1846, by Captain David Hull and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for the Oregon Territory which had been organized in 1839. In 1862, Oregon City passed a ordinance forbidding black people from owning property within its limits. This law was repealed in 1865 after a series of protests by African Americans who saw their rights being violated regularly by Portland officials. Oregon City continued to grow during the 19th century but struggled with financial problems caused by increased immigration and growth in other cities nearby. One solution was to build connecting streets that would allow goods and people to move easily between different parts of town. By 1900, Oregon City had become one of the most prosperous cities in Northwest America when it attained municipal autonomy from Portland proper (see History of Portland). However, economic troubles again struck during World War I whenPortland Restrictions were placed on munitions exports because of American entry into that war (see Portland-Warm Springs War). During World War II, Oregon CityPost Office opened at 5405 SW First Avenue on September 3rd 1942 as part of Project Paperclip which led to mass Japanese immigration into America through Operation Varsity (1944-1945). Oregon City was founded in 1847 by the team of pioneers led by John C. Fremont as a trading post on the flat bottom of the Columbia River. The site had been chosen because it was close to both water and timber resources, and it became one of the most important city sites in Oregon. In 1855, Oregon City was renamed Portland after General David S. Fauntleroy, 1st U.S. Cavalry commander during the Mexican-American War. In 1866, Portland became the state capital of Oregon and remained that way until 1907 when Salem took over that role. In 1868, Oregon City also became home to one of America's first high schools, Pacific Union School (later Pacific College). In 1870, an ordinance was passed establishing a city government with a mayor and five council members. The following year saw increased growth atPortland as traders and manufacturers moved into what is now Downtown Portland from outlying areas. Today, Oregon City is a thriving community with many cultural attractions including two museums – Museum of Art & Design and African American History Museum – as well as restaurants and businesses throughout its downtown area
