Oregon City is the oldest city in Oregon and has been serving as its capital since 1872. The city was founded by the Whitman brothers, who were seeking new land to make a ranch. They named their new town Oregon City after Chief Joseph's home state of Oregon. It was not until 1915 that the city moved from its original location on the east side of the Willamette River to its current location on the north bank of Hood Canal. The first gun store in Oregon City opened in 1892. This store sold guns for use within Oregon City and for sale at other locations across the Northwest. In 1907, a shooting took place in downtown Oregon City that left one person dead and four wounded. This event led to passage of local ordinance prohibiting handgun possession without a license. In 1912, a fire destroyed much of downtown Portland but did not damage Oregon City’s gun store. Gun violence rates began increasing in nearby cities beginning in the early 1990s, culminating with an shootings at two convenience stores near Salem in 1995 that killed three people and injured twenty-four others. The gunman had purchased his weapons there two days earlier from a federally licensed dealer. Gun control measures enacted by then- governor John Kitzhaber helped reduce these rates over time, but they would continue to rise again following mass shootings such as Aurora, Colorado theater Shooting and Newtown, Connecticut elementary school massacre which killed 26 people including 20 children and six adults when Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School with an AR-15 rifle on December 14th 2009 In February 2018 it was announced that NRA lobbyist Chris Cox had been hired as Mayor Harry Perdue's advisor on firearms policy

In recent years much larger mixed use projects have been designed around what remains of downtown core like Regency Square mall which covers most or all of one block once occupied by Central Library before it moved out into adjacent parklands; also known as The Foothills project has seen some demolition although much more renovation is taking place including restoration/updates to public art along High Street between First Ave./Powell River Rd./Willamette Blvd & S Multnomah St.; remaining portions will eventually become part Of OSU's Gill Coliseum Campus Combined Academic Health Sciences Campus Today much attention has been paid towards revitalization efforts around Register Place - home to several major universities including University Village (formerly PSU Housing) - with initial goals being pedestrian friendly streetcar connectivity between venues across three levels (including ground floor retail corridors), cultural programming opportunities for local artists and innovative uses for vacant storefronts along main streetside thoroughfares; programmatic goals include creatingmissing links throughout lively downtown core activating key intersections pedestrians pass through daily from their various destinations The original fort was destroyed by fire on October 10th 1861 but soon rebuilt under supervision by Captain John Sellers at what is now called FortGeorgeWright State Park just east of town center near where he currently resides at 503 NW Powell River Road

The pre-Prohibition Era (1892-1937) was a time of great change in America. Changes in society, government policy, and gun laws led to an increase in gun violence. Gun violence peaked during this time period with the shooting of John F Kennedy in 1963. During the Prohibition Era (1938-1968), gun control laws were passed which limited citizens' access to firearms. This period also saw an increase in crime rates as people sought to purchase weapons for protection. Gun violence decreased during this time period, but it did not stop completely. Gun crime doubled between 1933 and 1968. The post-Prohibition Era began after America's repeal of Prohibition in 1933. This era saw a decrease in gun violence as people regained access to firearms. However, this peace was short-lived as criminals began selling weapons again and new gangs emerged to fight for market share against other gangs. The number of homicides increased from 1944 to 1974, reaching their peak at 83% during that time period (Garrison & Hickey). Despite these challenges, overall firearm homicide rates have decreased since then (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives).
