Oregon City is a town in Oregon County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oregon City was founded in 1859 on the site of present day Oregon City by Gulick and Company fur traders. The first post office opened in 1861. After being renamed Oregon City in 1868, it became an incorporated city in 1899. In 1940, it adopted a resolution to become an open carry city and has since done so without incident. The Citizens Firearms Agreement of 1949 between Mayor Tom Rasmussen and gun rights advocates created support for gun light regulations which were eventually passed by the Oregon State Legislature during 1951 and 1952 as Measure O – also known as "The Gun Law Amendment". In early 1957 when tension over nuclear testing near the town heightened, local citizens began watching preparation live on television from government facilities; this led to enactment of the "No Trespassing at Nuclear Weapons Sites Act" which prohibited civilians from entering nuclear weapons sites without written consent from management. This law was repealed by then Governor Neil Abercrombie in 1959 following protests from community members who believed their right to peaceful assembly had been violated
