Oregon City is a small town in the Rogue Valley of Oregon. It was founded in 1879 by James Wickersham, who named it after his home state of Maine. The town developed slowly until 1906, when it had its first post office. In that year, Oregon City became an incorporated city and voted to create a gun hammer history museum. The gun hammer was invented in 1881 by John Schieffer and Charles Weisbach at their company J&C Smith & Sons Gun Hammer Works. The hammer was used to remove the chamfer from barrels before they were manufactured. The first firearms made in Oregon City were rifles and shotguns made by J&C Smith & Sons Gun Hammer Works and other local manufacturers. In 1906, Oregon City decided to become an incorporated city and passed a resolution creating the museum. That same year, the city created the first gun hammer history exhibit which toured through the town for two years before being disbanded in 1908 due to lack of funding. In 1913, another exhibition was created with help from a donation from Daughters of American Revolution President Clara Barton; this time it toured through most of Portland then returned to Oregon City for three months before being disbanded again due to lack of funding. In 1926, Mayor Harry Chandler donated land on which Ohio-born millionaire George Earle built what is now called the Earle Building housing the OregonCity Museum Classic Firearms Collection along with other exhibits including Airedale Terrier dog racing and stagecoach restoration work done by Don Sheehan Jr.. The Earle Building served as home to both museums until 1972 when it burned down during a fire that destroyed much of downtown Portland
