Oregon City, Oregon is home to the oldest gun shop in the United States. The store was founded in 1881 by Elias Howe and his son-in-law, Jacob Sauer. The store carried rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers until it closed in 1984. The town got its start as a cattle station on the banks of the Willamette River. When thosedays of rail travel disappeared and mail had to be transported by boat, farmers started trading goods with China using oxen and wagons drawn by horses. After World War II ended, Oregon City experienced rapid Growth until The Great Recession caused many businesses to close their doors and lay off workers; however, Mayor Nirav Shah revived downtown commerce through initiatives such as creating an arts district and promoting entrepreneurship opportunities within local industries. These efforts have helped keep Oregon City afloat since 2008 when it lost over 50% of its jobs from 2006-2008 alone In 2013 Mayor Shah announced plans to demolish portions of downtown core in order to create more open space that can be used for events or civic uses like soccer games or concerts
