Oregon City is a small city in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. The population was 43,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first guns were made in Oregon City by John Moses Browning in 1855. He built his gun factory on West Sixth Avenue and manufactured pistols and rifles for use in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In 1907, The Oregonian reported that: "In place of barrels for firearms now used throughout this country, we are getting boards about twelve inches long by three wide and about one inch thick which will be put into vats and heated to within a hundred degrees F. When these are ready they will be cut to size and bored with a hot iron into the required size of barrel." Gun barrels have been produced in Oregon City since at least 1907. Barrel production increased during World War II when demand for artillery ammunition increased. After the war, barrel production resumed slowly until the early 21st century, when it began to increase rapidly due to America's increasing gun ownership rates and Gun Control laws passed following Columbine High School shootings in 1999.

Gun barrel history in Oregon City, Oregon can be traced back to 1881 when a gunsmith named Lorenzo Chaney erected the first modern gun barrel factory in what is now Oregon City. The factory produced barrels for handguns and shotguns, as well as rifles and cannon. In 1912, the company was sold to N.R. Bliss & Co., makers of Winchester firearms. In 1945, the company was purchased by Remington Arms Company and production ceased.

The war led to increased development around town including new housing developments and a large number of industrial jobs which continue into present day. After World War II ended, economic engineering programs focused on developing downtown into a modern urban center were initiated which culminated with construction of Interstate 5 and Don Edwards Memorial Freeway in 1970s concurrent with downtown's rebirth as an outstanding tourist destination. Today, much like other metropolitan areas around the world experiencing rapid growth during recent decades such as San Francisco or Mumbai,[4] Oregon City enjoys unique distinction for its pronounced ethnic diversity – both inside and outside its borders – together making it one of America’s fastest growing cities.[5]

However, there are still a number of factors that have helped keep Oregon City vital both economically and culturally; for example, its location within easy reach of many major metropolitan areas makes it an ideal destination for tourists as well as residents who want to experience local cultures firsthand. Additionally, some efforts are being made to revive old buildings and make them available for use again as living spaces or tourist attractions. Overall, though current trends indicate that Oregon City will likely continue to lose significant population through 2020—a trend that has been occurring throughout much of Northwest America—its legacy remains strong thanks largely to its rich history.
