Oregon City is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 10,592 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County. The first permanent settler in Oregon City was George Groom who arrived on July 3, 1847. Oregon City became a town on December 9, 1892. Oregon City's history dates back to 1847 when George Groom discovered gold near the mouth of the Willamette River. With this discovery came new opportunities for trade and development in what would become known as the Gold Country of Oregon. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses operating in Oregon City and it had reached its peak as a lumber and mining center. However, by the early 20th century, economic stagnation and war-time censorship had caused many mills to close their doors; however, one local entrepreneur revived commerce with his innovative marketing approach called "The Great American Shopping trips." This strategy resulted in increased business for both locals and out-of-towners alike during what would be referred to as "the golden age" of Oregon City's commerical success story. In 1933,[1] Portland replaced Salem as the capital of Oregon after being chosen from a pool of finalists following an election process that included rounds of voting among mayors from throughout Multnomah County.[2] The decision not to move downtown due to environmental concerns led to a significant decline in business activity around OregonCity until recent times when redevelopment has rekindled some commercial interests within town limits OregonCity's roots go back before it even became an incorporated municipality On January 2nd 1886 when several citizens met at Centennial Hall to create "The Citizens' Committee for Improvement of Main Street", later renamed “The Civic Association” which recommended that incorporation be granted so that they could better manage affairs such as street cleaning and lighting etc., becoming Columbia School District No 8409 In 1893 Columbia School District #8409 merged into Columbian School District #9001 creating what would eventually become Douglas County That same year saw construction begin on Grant Park which would serve as home base for most county operations until 1968 whenDouglas Countys annexation intoPortland made Grant Park an integral part of the newly established city
