Ontario, Oregon was a small and isolated community in the Willamette Valley of Oregon until 1846 when it became part of what is now California. The town developed around an Agricultural Society that had been formed in 1839. In 1850, the society merged with another agricultural society to create the Northern Pacific Railroad. The railroad helped spur the growth of Ontario and other small towns along its route. Ontario reached its peak population in 1860 at 223 people, but by 1870 it had declines to 98 people and by 1910 it had decreased to just 10 people. It has since declined again, remaining a census-designated place (CDP) with no residents in 2010. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ontario were Spanish traders from San Francisco who landed on September 25, 1792 during the Mexican-American War on Mactan Island. They named the island Isla de la Victoria after their monarchical capital of Spain, Barcelona. The Spanish name for this area may have been reused as an Aboriginal word meaning “Island of Many People” because there were many Indigenous peoples living here at that time including the Coast Salish and Chinook tribes who called themselves Yahkónalámok or “Many People Island” because they lived on both sides of Vancouver Island. In 1839, members of the Agricultural Society founded a post office near present day Kitchener, Ontario which served as their local exchange depot for mail deliveries between northern California and southern Oregon through wagon trains carrying goods overland across country then downriver to Portland via Astoria and points northeastward until they reached Montreal in late November or December each year. This service continued until 1865 when stagecoaches replaced wagons as primary means of transportation between Canada and southern Oregon due to advances in steamboats which made travel much easier over difficult terrain than over land where horses could only go so far before becoming exhausted or captured by hostile natives along the way .
