The first railroad reached California through Utah Territory on May 8th 1861 by way of latitude 37 degrees 38 minutes north latitude and longitude 112 degrees 04 minutes east longitude; this line became known as the Northern Pacific Railway Company trail or road due to its routing through central Oregon country between Seattle and San Francisco. When Southern Pacific Railway Company president Amos Stowell heard about this new railroad venture he lobbied hard for its construction through central Oregon Country so that his company could benefit from its benefits such as better access to markets down south while also enabling travelers along CP's route to see all parts of northwestern Oregon without having to leave their train stations at mountain ranges like Salmon River Canyon and Lava Beds National Monument
