In 1851, George Washington discovered gold along the Rogue River while exploring for new land to colonize in America; he named this area "Oregon" after his home province of British Columbia. At first, many people who found gold in Oregon believed that it was because of Native Americans' staking their claims to these lands—the giant Comstock Lode had been discovered in Nevada just a few years earlier! However, upon further exploration by others and examination of samples from various locations around Oregon and North California (including Jerome County), it was determined that alluvial gold was present not only on the Rogue but also on other nearby rivers including the Hood River and Donnelle Rivers. In 1855, following several months of mining operations by numerous men and women across much of Whatcom County as well as placer mining downriver on both sides of the river near where Mount Hood now stands, assay ruby ore from Canadian mines at Ashland City led to significant speculation among miners about whether they might have struck pay dirt with this exciting new source of wealth! By 1861–1862 over 2 million dollars worth of assessment ruby ore had been mined in what became known as The Golden Spike Field; however barely 60 acres were developed due largely to lacklustre results from initial attempts at processing due to low grades obtained from local rocks/stones rather than harder types found naturally within these areas! In 1863, when mail service between Eugene (OR) and Portland (OR) began operation via stagecoach boatloads each day instead of horses or wagons having taken centuries before then due to rugged terrain & high costs associated with traveling overland via military trails then linked up by wagon roadways such as those used today throughout most NW America (& parts Canada too!), residents in The Dalles Heights area east-northeast OF Ontario started receiving notices & Express advertisements HERE for jobs open for laborers working on “The Great Western Railway” construction project underway near Salem OR….thus starting what would become known as “The Ore District”…. …in fact one could travel approximately 160 miles north-northwest from downtown Eugene & eventually reach THE ORE DISTRICT located just outside Of OR…..just past mileposts 17 thru 19 on State Highway 20th Street && just inside Of Bullfrog Lake Road country drive off USFS Rd 242nd Avenue). As mentioned earlier there were no hotels or other amenities available within ANYWHERE NEAR THIS AREA until dispatching agents sent out BY stagescoach teamsters operating here did so beginning Late 1800s prior to prohibition making such NF Wanted employment hazardous if caught…..pioneering spirit & hard work kept many locals here thru prohibition efforts although some DID leave due TO THE THINGS WERE NO GOOD FOR THEM NOW THATワクワクしてるようになった……..(you know how things are nowadays…)
