In 1848, the United States acquired Oregon from Great Britain. The first U.S. resident in Oregon was Captain John McLoughlin and his party, who arrived on July 14, 1848. On November 1, 1849, a joint U.S.–British expedition traveled overland from Washington to explore the newly acquired territory and discovered the Columbia River. The next year, President James K. Polk ordered General George A. Custer to cross the river and establish an American presence in what is now Idaho and Montana; however, Custer's march into Mexico ended with his death at Battle of Buena Vista on December 7,1847. On January 26, 1850, the Provisional Government of Oregon was formed under the leadership of Brigham Young with help from Evanston entrepreneur David Barlow (the son of wealthy British settler Samuel Benton). In February 1850, Mormon pioneers began arriving in eastern Oregon; by early May they had founded Fort Hall on Snake River where they established a temporary capital while they awaited authorization from Brigham Young to build a more permanent settlement called Deseret (later Salt Lake City). By September 1850 about 9500 Mormons were living in eastern Oregon; by December that number had grown to 12000. In addition to their religious duties as Latter-day Saints (Mormons), many pioneer men & women also worked as farmers or ranch hands while building up their new communities and societies; some did so for decades after leaving Utah’s Great Basin region during what became known as “The Great Migration”1 During these years there was no statehood forOregon because it lay within the Union Territory of California which Congress had not yet created when it acquired California in 18462 . On February 14th 1860 Congress passed an act creating a new state out of part of western Oregon including all present-day Nevada County including parts of southern Douglas County3 . This action completed what would have been an ultimate political goal for both parties: recognizing"Oregon Territory" as one portion of "the great Northwest", although technically still within Mexican America4 The gold discovery at Sutter's Mill in northern Nevada Counties started bringing people & money northward in search of opportunities quicker than could be found east of Sacramento Valley5 By 1861 mostof central Nevada County had been settled6
