Newberg, Oregon is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Newberg was founded in 1851 by William and Mary Newberg as a Methodist Episcopal church town on Willamette Riverbank east of what is now downtown Portland. The first post office in Newberg was established on October 3, 1851. The original settlers were farmers from northern England who arrived with their families on the "Oregon Zephyr" in 1846. They named their new town after John Wesley Newbern who had preached at nearby Albany, New York during the mid-1820s. In 1850, the Methodist Episcopal church held its first services here and soon enough there were several other churches in town too including Presbyterian and Lutheran denominations which united to form the First Methodist Church in December 1851. Eventually it became known as "Newberg" because of this name change. The early years of Newberg were difficult due to competition fromPortland for jobs and space within the growing community. However through hard work and a little luck things started to improve over time with growth in businesses such as grocery stores, lumberyards and restaurants developing along with more housing options available throughout the late 1800s until World War I when much less residential development took place due to wartime restrictions on building materials such as wood or metal that could be used for munitions production

In 1845, the Oregon Territory was created from parts of the Northwest Territories and Newberg became its capital. The city's growth continued through the early 1800s with waves of immigrants arriving to work on farms or start their own businesses. By 1860, Newberg had a population of about 1,500 people and it soon became an important center for commerce and industry. By 1870, however, the city's population had declined to about 350 people because of factors such as cheap land availability and increasing competition from larger towns across Oregon. In 1888, however, Newberg re-established itself as an important commercial center with a population over 1,000 people again thanks to new development around the downtown area. Over time, however, Newberg slowly lost its status as an important commercial center due to changing demographics and economic struggles within Oregon overall. By 2000, its population had fallen below 500 people again and it is still considered an small town by many standards today
