Newberg, Oregon is a town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Snake River Plain about 25 miles (40 km) east of Bend and 30 miles (48 km) west of The Dalles. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. Newberg is known for its agriculture and timber industries, as well as its annual Newberg Pumpkin Festival which takes place in September. Newberg was founded by Captain George Vancouver on July 24, 1825 as Fort Vancouver on an eminence called Grouse Butte to prevent hostile Indians from entering the area. The first white settler in what is now Newberg was James A. McDougall who arrived in 1848 from Illinois with his family and some oxen. He built a log cabin and began to clear land for crops near present day downtown Newberg. In 1850, John Wesley Powell came through the area on his exploring expedition and named several rivers including the Snake after General Harrison's army had retreated from Battle of Bull Run during the American Civil War In 1851 pioneer Simeon Wright purchased 640 acres (246 ha) south of downtown Newberg from Colonel William Halsey for $8 per acre ($1/ha). This land became known as Wright Prairie due to pioneer Simeon Wright's ownership of most of it before he sold it to General W plains McCullough in 1865 The post office at this location was established on January 1, 1865 under name Fort Vancouver until November 15th that same year when it changed its name to Newbern Newbern also saw service as a military post during World War I until it was relinquished December 8th 1918 In 1949 when Oregon became a state, portions of Benton County were transferred to new states including Oregon which included much of what is now eastern Benton County On February 5th 1950 Portland-based developer Frederick Ladd offered $10 million for all or part of what are now parts of Deschutes County which included much of what is now eastern Deschutes County Ladd made an unsuccessful offer to purchase all or partof what are now partsof Clackamas County which includes muchofwhatisnow eastern Clackamas County On May 10th 1950 Ladd again made an unsuccessful offer to purchase all or partof what are now partsof Tillamook County which includes muchofwhat isnow eastern Tillamook County Oregon Legislature passed Bill No 11-5122 making the townships within these counties be dissolved and their inhabitants be annexed into neighboring cities without vote by those living therein if they did not want annexation

Newberg, Oregon is a small town in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The population was 3,703 at the 2010 census. It is located about 60 miles northeast of Portland and about 25 miles southwest of Eugene. The community was founded in 1887 by Luther Newberg and others as a farming town on the eastern side of what is now Willamette Valley. In 1896, Newberg became the first incorporated town in Oregon. In 1957, it merged with neighboring Goodyear to form Newberg-Goodyear-Newberg. Newberg experienced major growth during World War II; its commercial sector led to its nickname "The Dorchester of the West". After the war, however, local economicactivity waned and Newberg declined as an agricultural center. However, over time it has regained some vitality as an education and cultural hub for southeastern Oregon and southwestern Washington County. The community's downtown area contains a variety of shops, restaurants, galleries and other businesses., Luther Newberg was born on February 17th 1847 in Swedish Lutheran church parish #1 (now part of Albany) in Göteborg County, Sweden*. He immigrated to America via Liverpool*, arriving on October 12th 1852 aboard SS Copenhagen* outside Seattle*. Luther attended high school there before coming westward to join his family in what would become Oregon Territory.* On July 4th 1855 he married Catharine Aiken from Princeton Township*, one of four children born to John Aiken* (1817-1892) and Eliza Jane (née Lea)* (1821-1907). They settled near Salem* where they raised six children: Lorenz Germanus (born 1865), Anna Borelli (born 1870), John Fenton (born 1872), Emmeline Matthey (* 1865 - died 1946), twins Gottlieb Wilhelm Friedrich *(1868-1935)and Meta Johansen *(1870-1945). After their father's death they moved back eastward along with their families to Goodyear(* around 1880*) where Luther began his career as an importer/exporter from Sweden*. He soon acquired a large share in Goodyear's operations including physical plant which he renovated/upgraded several times between 1901-1905 including building what is now known as Old Main Street.* In 1907 he bought land adjacent to present day NW Sixth Avenue for $3 per acre; this parcel formed what are today Park Drive and NW Fourth Avenue.* With good harvests year after year starting from 1908 through 1914 he decided that enough farmland had been developed so that he could not keep importing Iver Johnson’s seed potatoes for cash only but rather lease them out at 1¢ per bushel** instead*** [*serial number found on seed package]. From 1915 onward all crops were grown usingorganic methods *** [*the original Ecolab farm tractor], beginningOWeekly farmers Markets were held here weekly thru 1922**** *. By 1935 when production increased again due largely to WWII*** [*Iver Johnson food supply interruption] leased prices increased 50% or more**** *. Today much offal production takes place here also *****.
Newberg was founded in 1847 by George W. Newberg, a settler from Maine who named the town after his home town of Nantucket. The first post office in the community was established in 1850, and the first school was opened in 1851. In 1865, Newberg became an incorporated city. In 1937, Newberg joined the Oregon Municipal League, becoming one of its member cities. In 1948, Newberg became a state city and retains this status to this day.
