Newberg, Oregon is a small town located in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 797 at the 2010 census, down from 851 at the 2000 census. It is part of Bend, Oregon. The first recorded mention of Newberg is in 1842 when John C. Fremont discovered it while exploring the Columbia River region. In 1865, Newberg's post office was established and named after Newberg, Washington County in Oregon Territory. When word spread about a gold rush in Northern California starting around 1849, many people traveling through Central Oregon decided to head east to find gold at what would become known as Gold Hill (later renamed Bullion Hill). One man who made this decision was James Fenton who arrived in October 1849 and placer mining began on November 3rd near present day Newberg with local prospector George Stephenson leading the way. Gold ran out rapidly so by January 1850 Fenton had abandoned his efforts and returned to Seattle with his equipment and some supplies for another year’s mining expedition which he called “Fenton’s Return” because he only found 1/10th ounce of gold worth producing each assay warrant he issued during that period totaling $1,080 total worth of discoveries over seven months However even though no new discovery has been made at Gold Hill since then it still remains an attractive prospect due to its location just minutes away from downtown Bend on Hwy 97A (the old US 101) This site hosted a number of mills operated by entrepreneurs such as James Kapp who started operations here between 1862-1868; Wm Dyeing & Sons who did business from 1865-1892; Jno Pritchard & Bros., proprietors of Hwy 97A between 1892-1901; E W Greenacre directorship until 1919; Harry A Trainor general manager from 1916 until 1923). By 1880 there were 6 mills operating here including 2 coke ovens which provided heat for the mills and also produced coal used by power plants across town along Hwy 97A where now you can see them if you drive down Main Street towards Old Mill Road they are still there but turned into housing units back then.) In 1886 OSU Extension agents James Ferguson and George Armstrong explore potential waterfalls on Clear Creek south of town while living among the local Native Americans known as Thetas people They noted fresh water springs nearby but no water available to drink so they recommended building a mill on Clear Creek rather than drilling for water Thereafter development continued apace withsawmill being built in 1893 followed by gristmill 1915 Then cheese factory 1917 Finally oil well 1928 The primary economic activity here until World War II was farming although some shops also opened up such as hardware store 1935 Finally post office closed 1958 AfterWWII most residents moved away or left altogether leaving behind a few families that remained until 1990 when school funding became inadequate making it necessary for Newberg Mayor Bob Hauser to petition the State Legislature for assistance In order to keep their community going they applied for zoning changes making it possible for their community center be built In 1994 however despite all attempts by Hauser & City Manager Rich Rasmussen (then Mayor) nothing happened beyond approving a request for funds prior to its closing due to budget cuts) In recent years much redevelopment has occurred with businesses moving into older buildings renovated or replaced while new homes have been erected overlooking Clear Creek providing enough open space yet maintaining privacy
