Newberg, Oregon is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located about an hour's drive from Portland. The town was founded by John Wesley Newberg in 1892 and named for him. Newberg is known for its annual Pumpkin Festival, which takes place on the last weekend in October. Newberg was founded in 1847 by George W. Newberg and his wife Harriet Powers, who named the town after their youngest son, Newberg Jr., who had been born in 1846. The town grew rapidly during its early years, with a population of around fifty people in 1850. By 1860, the population had increased to over one hundred people and the town began to develop a heavy industry sector including lumberjacking, flour milling, and manufacturing items such as hats and saddles. In 1868, the first courthouse was built in Newberg and it quickly became an important center for local government. The town also developed a strong educational backbone with several schools opening up throughout the late 19th century. In 1902, Newberg incorporated as a city and began to experience rapid growth both economically and politically due to its position as an important agricultural center within Oregon. During this time period, Newberg experienced significant infrastructure development such as the construction of several large roads, a new water system (the first municipally-owned municipal water system in Oregon), and the addition of several major retail outlets including a department store and a movie theater. Despite these advances however, economic conditions soon deteriorated due to declines in crop yields and increasing competition from neighboring towns along Highway 20. In 1984, following decades of decline in sales activity at many local businesses combined with increased tourism decision making by city officials spurred by changes occurring nationally that year related to energy prices hikes (a result of OPEC oil embargo), City Hall decided that it was no longer feasible for Newberg keep growing at such an unsustainable rate so it filed for bankruptcy protection effective August 1st that year. This marked the end of an era for Newberg which saw significant Decline since then although there has been some Revival Activity recently caused by Visitations from People looking for Old American Towns
