The river was named for French explorers who explored the area in the late 18th century. In 1886, J.P. Morgan and his associates founded the Portland Manufacturing Company here in what is now Milwaukie. The company manufactured firearms, munitions, and other items. Milwaukie, Oregon is a city in Clark County, Oregon, United States. The population was 23,579 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. The name Milwaukie comes from "Wah Wah Lake," meaning "milk-colored water." The first European to explore the area was Captain George Vancouver on his HMS Erebus on November 18, 1792. He named the body of water after Chief Makah of the Kwamekwa tribe and called it Puget Sound (after Prince Rupert's Land). In 1824, Lieutenant George Prentice discovered gold near present day Milwaukie when he and his party explored what is now known as the Portland–Milwaukie Gold Rush District. Milwaukie became an important trading post during this time with its location between Bend and Salem making it a popular destination for travelers. In 1861, John Day founded homesteads at Bush Prairie and Millstream east of town on land that would later become part of Milwaukie. In 1865 he donated 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of straight path along Indian Creek from Bridgeport to his home lot in what is now Millstream which became one of primary streets in town. On July 4, 1886 – two years after he donated the land – Day died suddenly at age 72 while out walking his dog onaddleback near Bush Prairie when some rockslides swept him off his horse and deposited him three feet belowground into an unmarked grave where he remain until 1978 when ground ballistics testing located his remains with those belonging to pioneer James Witherspoon nearby buried beneath unlevel earthworks across from Pioneer Cemetery still waiting for final excavation results in order to determine if they are really all related - like many others before them - to Day's death This event forever changed how people think about pioneers because not only did they die violently but their graves remain largely unvisited despite evidence pointing to them being interred here long ago... Today many people believe that either Washington State or Canada took Day's body without giving proper burial due process or simply forgot about him! In 1907 The Junction Hotel burned down leaving business owners stranded without a hotel room for weeks while reconstruction started; this created a need for more space so new buildings were built including Grange Hall which stands today as one of town’s most iconic landmarks complete with its own BART station platform just northwest of downtown Milwaukeemilwaukee Avenue

The city also hosted several rounds of the United States Open Tennis Championships during its early years, leading to it becoming known as "The tennis capital of America".
