Milwaukie is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Columbia River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 50,815. The name Milwaukie comes from the local word "mila," meaning "milk" and "-waukie" meaning "a small stream." The first people to live in Milwaukie were Native Americans who lived along the riverbanks. They hunted and gathered resources such as waterfowl and deer, which they used for food and their own needs. In 1824, Captain George Vancouver discovered what would become Milwaukie when he sailed past on his HMS Discovery expedition. He named this area Puget Sound after John Puget, one of his assistants on the voyage. In 1847, James Finlayson built a cabin at what is now site of Pioneer Courthouse Square in Milwaukie. This was the beginning of what would be called downtown Milwaukie. By 1850, there were over 20 buildings in downtown Milwaukee! The first store opened in 1851 by John Alderfer & Co.. For many years it was considered to be one of Oregon's Elite Businesses! In 1862, Major General Grant's forces invaded Oregon during the American Civil War and burned all but two blocks of Portland before retreating back across the Columbia River into Washington Territory (now Idaho). Milwaukiemania ensued with citizens rushing to purchase whatever ammunition or supplies they could find; some managed to stockpile enough weapons that they became known as 'Portlanders'. Milwaukee Brewers owner Bob Feller played his last game at Safeco Field on July 15th 1977; however Milwaukee never lost its identity as an independent city until 1978 when it merged with neighboring Everett into one municipality under then-Mayor Norm Coleman's leadership known then as 'Milwaukee/Everett'.
