Milwaukie is an incorporated town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of the Columbia River. Milwaukie was founded by Hudson's Bay Company employees in 1846 as a fur trading post on land grant from Chief Joseph during the Rogue River Gold Rush. In 1848, it became part of the new Whitman County and was renamed Milwaukie after Milwaukian physician Dr. George Washington Milwaukie. The first school in town opened in 1857 and remained open until 1915 when it closed due to lack of students. In 1876, Milwaukie incorporated as a city under the name of Portland and remains an incorporated city today with a mayor-council form of government. Milwaukie is home to many important landmarks including: University of Oregon (UO), Osprey Stadium (the home field for both the Portland Timbers and USL affiliate PDX Rovers), Pioneer Courthouse Square, House of Representatives Building/Circus Hall/Oregon State Capitol Building/Portland Art Museum, Lighthouse Park and much more!
In 1855, the first permanent settler in Milwaukie was William H. Smith. He and his family established a farm on what is now the corner of Northeast 5th and Mill RD. In 1861, John Prentice bought land adjacent to Smith's farm and began building a toll road to connect the two parcels of land. The first toll road was built in 1868-69 between NE4th and NE5th Streets. The road ran parallel to the present day Interstate 5 corridor, providing access frommilwaukie westward to Portland.
