The first permanent European settler in what is now Multnomah County was John Day in 1847. He built a cabin on the Willamette River and called it Daytown. Milwaukie grew rapidly during World War II as many Pacific Coast cities went through wartime growth spurt. In 1944, Multnomah County was created from land that had been part of Clackamas, Columbia, Polk and Harney counties. The new county had an estimated population of 507 people when it was formed but by 1950 had grown to 1,708 residents thanks to establishment of businesses and housing developments such as Beacon Hill Estates and Laneview Hills. In 1960, Multnomah voters passed a referendum making it an unincorporated area within Multnomah County with its own government which would be responsible for education, urban planning, social services etc., separate from the larger county government; this became effective on January 1st of that year. AsMultnomah COUNTY continued to grow more diverse in both population and economic activity over time, so too did its infrastructure needs- including new roads (including Interstate 5), watermain replacement (including the purchase of ), firefighting resources (including ) and public transportation (such as ). One such initiative began in 1984 when levy funds were raised for the construction of a new library downtown which would serve as a community center and research center for the city; this project eventually came to fruition as the Portland Library Foundation building opened in 2006 adjacent to Waterfront Park

In 1850, both parts were redesignated as Oregon and Nevada Counties respectively; however becauseofthe Mexican–American War mostofthegrowthandambitionsinthenewcountiesrelapseduntil1872when theywereagain redesignatedasMultnomah COUNTYandINCORPORATED WITHNOSTATEWIDECOMPETITION。 On May 5th 1870 President Ulysses S Grant signed legislation creating Lane & Co., Incorporated Railroad Company with a right-to-way east from Salem terminus on Beaver Dam Road across Columbia River at Whatcomport Lake into Polk Township thence upriver to Hancock’s Landing on Bonneville Bay where it would terminate at Suquamish Point opposite Uniontown on Kitsap Peninsula then downriver along Stevens Point Harbor seaward to Olympia Fields about three miles from Everett Headland beyond Tacoma Harbour before terminating at Suquamish Point opposite Uniontown.—The original line betweenSuquamish Point opposite UniontownandTacoma Harbourwas intothepaddleroadtodayknown asSR 157
