On May 10, 1830 Vancouver designated Milwaukie as the site of a post office under his governance; it was established on July 4th of that year. In 1853 John Day founded an agricultural colony near what is now Eugene and named it Day's Valley after himself and fellow pioneers James Hutton and Joseph Lane. By 1861 Day's Valley had grown so large that he decided to move it into its own township, butMultnomah County refused to recognizeDay's Township because it straddled part of their county line. In 1862 Day formed an alliance with other pioneer settlers from various parts of Oregon and Washington known as the Alliance Association; they petitioned county officials for recognition which was granted on November 6th of that year. On January 1st 1870 Multnomah County became one hundred fifty miles square when all Butte County except Youtland (southwest corner) were annexed by Multnomah County; however Youtland remained unincorporated until 1959 when it joined the city of Portland as part of annexation by that city. Due to increasing railroad traffic through downtown Milwaukie during World War II many businesses closed down or relocated due to bombings during the war including J&R Lumber Company which moved into its current building on SE 3rd Ave in 1949 while stillBombing bombing raids nightly until 1957 when they stopped because then Bombing started again

In 1865, James Fenton purchased land east of town from Thaddeus Stevens for $2 per acre; he built an academy there that still stands today known as Oregon State University (OSU). OSU became one of the biggest employers in town with its horticulture department becoming one of the most successful programs in American higher education at that time. By 1870, many citizens had moved toMilwaukie from surrounding towns because of good farmland values and opportunities for growth thanks to irrigation projects initiated by Captain George Soretts—founder of Soretts Brothers Ranch—and others who developed Northwest irrigated agriculture centuries before Americans did so during their Unification Revolution efforts within Great Britain

Milwaukie quickly became an important transportation hub for settlers and miners traveling to the goldfields, and its location made it a natural stop on wagon trains making their way from California to Oregon. In addition to its role as a regional center, Milwaukie also served as home to many local businesses and residents during its early years. By 1870, however, Milwaukie had begun to experience significant economic decline due to increased competition from other nearby towns and citys during the country's railroad boom. Despite this setback, Milwaukie continued to grow steadily over the next several decades, becoming one of Oregon's most populous cities by 1900. During its time as an urban center, Milwaukie also experienced various significant cultural changes including significant population growth in both English and German language communities; development of professional services such as law enforcement and education; and emergence of new arts movements such as jazz music and theater production. In recent times, Milwaukee has seen renewed activity within both its traditional commercial sectors (such as retail trade) and its creative community (such as graphic design and photography).
