In 1892, residents of Milwaukie, Oregon voted to incorporate as a city. The vote coincided with the development of Portland and its growth in popularity as a commercial center. A group of knife-makers who lived in the town founded the first knife company in America,Milwaukie Knife Manufacturing Company. The company continued to produce knives until it merged into Singer Sewing Machines in 1996. The history of knives began with hand tools used for personal defense and agricultural tasks. Knives gradually became more sophisticated as they were designed for specific purposes such as hunting, fishing,processing foods or perform other tasks that required precision and accuracy. From the simple dagger to today’s high-end kitchen knives, there has been a constant evolution in how people use and appreciate these tools. Milwaukie is home to two of the most notable knife companies in America: Singer Sewing Machines and Milwaukie Knife Manufacturing Company (MKMC). Together, these businesses produced some of the world's most iconic kitchen knives - including those that are still popular today such as the Gillette Venus Debutante, Remington 870 alligator migratory folders, and Stanley No 1 Butcher's Knife. In addition to their production line products, both companies also released numerous cookbooks featuring recipes using their unique blades including: The Kitchen Bible by Betty Crocker; Cookbook 2 by Alice Waters;and Mastering Cookery by Sylvia Plath. Today MKMC is celebrating its 125th anniversary - making it one of the longest continuously operating knife businesses in North America!

Milwaukie, Oregon was founded in 1876 by George and Emma Milwaukie. The town grew rapidly due to the presence of the United States Army's 9th Infantry Regiment stationed here during World War I. In 1923, Milwaukie became the county seat of Multnomah County. The growth of the local school system and other civic organizations led to a new downtown building being erected in 1933. In 1984, Multnomah County merged with Washington County and Milwaukie became the new county seat. Various economic challenges have led to significant redevelopment in recent years, including construction of a new courthouse and jail; development of an office park across from Interstate 5; and growth in light industry along Interstate 5. Today, Milwaukie is one of the most vibrant communities in Oregon and its proud history makes it an ideal place to call home.
In 1864, the U.S.Army built a fort on the site of present-day Milwaukie, Oregon to protect settlers from Native American attacks. The fort was renamed Fort George in 1865 and later Fort Stevens. In 1906, the Oregon state legislature designated the area around Milwaukie as an agricultural fairgrounds and town square. In 1928, the Portland Electric Railway Company opened a line between Milwaukie and Portland,Oregon. This made Milwaukie one of the first towns in Oregon to have electricity. In 1937,Milwaukie incorporated as a city and its first mayor was Harry Wessels Sr.. The city annexed portions of Gladstone Township in 1942 and 1945. The population of Milwaukie peaked at over 100,000 in 1951 butdeclined rapidly during the following decade due to heavy growth in other nearby cities such as Portland and Salem. However, by 1970the population had slowly begunto grow again with some predictions that it could reach 200,000 by 2020 or 2030).
