Gun sights have been a part of Oregonian culture for over 100 years. One of the first sighting devices in Oregon was a knapsack with an eyelet at one end, used to measure distances by sight. In 1876, Milwaukie resident John Henniker designed and built the first permanent firearm sights in Oregon. The device consisted of a metal plate that could be rotated to adjust range, and was used by riflemen and shotsmen during the Black Hole War. In 1903, Milwaukie's Wm J. Ryan erected the first gunsmith shop west of Portland in Oregon Territory. In 1918, he donated hisgunsight trademark to the State of Oregon as part of its Gun Sight Laws program. The use of firearms has played an important role in Milwaukie's history since it isOregon's oldest city and home to one of the most diverse gun-owning populations in Western Washington. Today, UOP has over 2600 students and staff members including 4200 graduate students who work at ninety-six colleges and universities across North America Milwaukie's economy has shifted increasingly towards technology since 2000 when Google moved its headquarters from Seattle to nearby Oregon City (). There has been a long and varied history of sights on firearms.
