A wagon train carrying “milch cows” (cattle) headed east out of town on April 6th1830 stopped at Mr Neilson’s cabin at milepost 17 on today’s Governor Road; Mrs Neilson brought her six cows across-country into town for safe keeping! After dinner at Mr Neilson’s house on April 7th 1830 nine men - four Democrats Capt James Doolittle & 4 Republicans Dr David Ferris - set out upriver toward Baker Field but failed reaching it before nightfall; instead they camped near present day Stevenson Beach according to Allan Nevins who wrote: " Nine miles below Corvallis they met with Capt Doolittle's party who told them about ancient water sources under Stevens Prairie which he supposed led down by Baker field...the next morning Capt Doolittle went back upstream followed by his men but without food or water returned home after finding only game." According to historian Rick Majerus this event marked “the beginning of commercial trade through central Oregon with Puget Sound…[and] helped lay the groundwork for future settlers moving westward into eastern Washington County."

Most likely this name derived from the Indian word meaning "a place where many people gather." A post office called Milwaeke was established at this location on March 3, 1852, but no mail arrived until May 4th due to the wagon train's delay getting through the Rocky Mountains. In 1861 Reverend J Bowers organized what would become Milwaukie Methodist Church which helped grow the community economically by supplying goods necessary for church services such as lumber and hardware stores along with restaurants that catered to local miners' needs during their gold rush years - providing jobs for locals while helping attract businesses away from Salem or Eugene/Portland. In 1903 G W Goodall founded Portland Daily News newspaper which soon became one ofOregon's most influential media outlets helping promote economic development within Multnomah County while giving residents access to news 24/7 free of charge - remaining open until 1984 when it merged with the Willamette Week newspaper group becoming The Oregonian Newspaper Company Ltd.. Today Milwaukee celebrates its 150th anniversary year with events throughout the year including various festivals such as Oktoberfest & Pumpkin Festival followed by carnival rides & shows each month during October festivities leading up into February when celebration culminates with countywide parade down Main Street followed by daylong BBQ event

Milwaukie was founded by John Sutter in 1846. The town was initially named "Sutterville" after the founder, but it was renamed Milwaukie in 1851 to honor General George Armstrong Custer, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been killed in action. The city's first post office opened on March 1, 1850. In 1862, Milwaukie became the capital of Oregon.
