Milwaukie, Oregon is home to one of the most significant gun locks in American history. The city was founded in 1887 by J.B. Nichols and W.H. Milburn as a settlement on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1897, Milwaukie became the first city in Oregon to ordain a fully municipal police department and impose universal civilian disarmament laws. Nichols manufactured over 350 different types of gun locks at his new factory on NE Second Avenue (now SE Third Street). This highly specialized industry was characterized by tight tolerances, so that each lock had to meet specific standards set by Nichols himself and his team of engineers; these specs made it possible for him to produce high-quality products at low cost without compromising product quality or safety. In 1938, Milwaukie's City Council passed ordinance No. 5 “ prescribing regulations for safe storage of firearms within the limits of said City” which banned handguns except with proper license exceptions (FFLs) within city limits; this ordinance remains in effect today and allows residents to keep handguns locked up inside their homes without fear of prosecution or confiscation (see photo below). Growth continued through suburban development until Multnomah County voters approved a sales tax increase in November 1974 that created Multnomah Urban Renewal District (MUD) status for Milwaukie and other towns within its boundaries including Hillsboro and Beaverton; this allowed for annexation byMultnomah City proper following propositions passed by citizens in referendum in late 1975 and 1976 respectively seeking to unify all of downtown with an airport or new library/parking garage as well as improve street grid alignment making it easier to walk around town without getting lost between parks and neighborhoods. Many current businesses were founded or continue operations because they could benefit from MUD status including Nike Inc., Starbucks Coffee & Tea Limited Partnership (now Dunkin' Donuts), Safeway Grocery Stores Co., Incorporated (now Acme Paper Company), Pacific Glassworks llc., Jardine & Hastings LLP, Lumberjanes Llc., The Orchard Shopping Center ltd., Benches Pizza & Pasta Delivery LLC - now Papa Murphy's Pizza USA Incorporated - along with many more since then such as Adobe Systems Incorporated (later Adobe Creative Suite), Microsoft Corporation (later Microsoft Office), Sam Adams Brewery Ltd., Gov't Agencies Services Authority - now Agnew Grains Corporation - all while keeping their full names unchanged such as Nike+ Jordan Brand LLC or Omnitrax Corporation although most have since become part of larger companies On January 1st 2021, Multnomah County finished demolishing much of downtown following decades of planning resulting in over 2 million square feet destroyed or remodeled creating an impressive mixed use redevelopment project called Pioneer Square which includes new office buildings including Amazon Web Services Headquarters (), Wells Fargo Bank Building (), MAX Light Rail Station (), Mercy Hospital () and many others In March 2019 it was announced that Willamette University would be moving from its original location near Burnside Bridge across Insley Creek to a new campus just south of Millstream Avenue adjacent to Providence Park which will house both undergraduate faculty plus graduate school programs along with housing developments set to open in 2020.. This marks the largest university move ever made in Oregon withover 50% OF THE UNIVERSITY BEING NEWLY BUILT IN MILWAUKIE
