Milwaukie is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 21,814 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Multnomah County. It lies on the central coast of the U.S. state of Oregon and borders the states of Washington and California to the south and west. The Milwaukie area has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, and early European explorers encountered them here in 1792 when they explored what is nowMultnomah County including present-day Milwaukie. In 1843, John Cascades built a ferry across Willamette River at this location which allowed goods from Vancouver Island to be brought downriver to Portland without having to go through that arduous journey overland. A year later, he donated land in what is now downtown Milwaukie for a public square known today as Pioneer Square. On July 4th, 1845, pioneer James Halliday donated land east of downtown Milwaukie for another public square also known as Pioneer Square - which still occupies that spot today! In 1848, milwuakee placer gold was discovered nearby and quickly became one of the most important regions for mining in Oregon because it had good payable material over large distances with little assay work needed other than finding veins or strikes! One such vein was called “The Gros Ventre” after an Indian term meaning deep watermining district (the discovery gave rise to various terms used by miners throughout their lives such as “Gros Ventre Mining District”). In 1850 local citizens petitioned Congress asking for help with Congressionally issued legislation calling for federal lands specifically within Oregon Territory being surveyed into prospective mining districts! This resulted in 1\6 million acres being divided up among nine different mining companies who all started drillings but never developed any definite ore deposits! However during this time period some interesting things were happening around town like JF Kelleher starting a grocery store on SW Morrison street (now SE Third Avenue) back in 1865; Edith Cavett running her first school in 1919; Stonington Brewing Company beginning production 1911 (later becoming bottleshop Seagrams); and many more!! During World War II there was much activity taking place here due to military supply convoys coming through on their way from Japan via Portland landing site - including hundreds of soldiers living right next door in Building 12-15 on Everett Street! The entire block containing those buildings still stands today housing several businesses!!! Milwaukie officially became a city on December 2nd 1949 following passage by city council Motion picture theater building lease granted permit #2 & conditional use permit #1 along NE First Ave & NW Harrison St - both located just north side old Courthouse lot where movie theaters used to be located before demolition began!!! Once again thanks largely to efforts by Mayor Tom Gresham & his then City Manager Norma Healey this truly historic milestone happened – making Miltawaiwek an official community member alongside longtime residents Steve Stonebraker (& his wife Jane) & Donny Wirthlin!!!!
