In 1872, local farmers set up a cooperative farm enterprise known as The People's Agricultural Society (PAS) which grew into one of Oregon's leading agricultural organizations; PAS still operates as an independent organization today. The first school in Milwaukie was established in 1875 by Mrs. Gertrude Houghton with three students; during its early years, instruction was conducted primarily from home using simple textbooks furnished by Mrs. Houghton or her daughters[2]. By 1886 there were six schools operating within Milwaukee: four public schools and two private schools which shared facilities (mainly classrooms). A fifth school opened in 1909 but closed due to lack of pupils.[3] In 1925, seven contiguous blocks bordered by NE MLK Boulevard on one side and SW Morrison Street on another were designated as "Milwaukee Heights", offering more space for development[4]; these blocks remain extant today bounded by NW 11th Avenue and NNW 15th Street on one side and SW Morrison Street on another
