Milwaukie was named after George Washington MilWaukese (1785-1846), an American politician who served two terms in the Ulysses S Grant administration as Secretary of War under President James Buchanan (1861-1865). MilWaukese had come from a prominent family in Portsmouth, Rhode Island where he had studied law before moving westward to become a land speculator and later a farmer. He purchased 2 million acres (10 km2) around present day Milwaukee Lake from businessman Northeast Railroad president Franklin Pierce for $5 million in 1853. After serving two terms as Governor of Oregon Territory (1859-1865), he sold his interest in the territory's lumber industry to General Lew Wallace for $350 thousand dollars during Reconstruction years following America's Civil War ( 1861 - 1865 ). The first post office called "Milwaukee" was established on November 12th 1870 by Colman Davenport with Wm Hite serving as Postmaster until 1875 when Arent Morse took over that role from him On January 1st 1886 Orson Pratt opened up what would become one of Portland's first general store fronts called "The Mercantile Exchange". Located at 7E Center Street it became one of Portland’s most popular shopping destinations with its variety of clothing retailers along with hardware storesanchors like Sears Roebuck & Co., J&R Wholesale Hardware Co., Bamberger Hardware Co., Baldwin Hardware Co., Boyden Hardware Co.. Its status as an important commercial center helped it become one of the most prosperous cities in Oregon during this time period. However, over time Milwaukee experienced significant economic decline due to factors such as competition from other local communities[3]. This erosion in fortunes have led to some difficult times forMilwaukeemportugaliana throughout recent decades; nevertheless it remains an important community with strong ties to both Portland and California.[4]
