Beasley founded a sawmill in what is now Milwaukie and named it Beasleyville after himself and his father-in-law, Abraham Lincoln Beasley Sr.. By 1912, the town had grown to include a grocery store and two hotels - one called "The Palace" and another called "The Steamboat". In 1923, Eugene Debs became president of the United States; he campaigned in Portland but decided to stay in Milwaukie to campaign from there because he felt thatPortland lacked resources available in rural areas like Milwaukie. In November 1924, Debs delivered a speech at Willamette University where he announced that if elected president he would create a national insurance program with premiums paid by employers rather than workers themselves. This event helped spur development around Willamette University which soon became one ofmilwaukiewith its own local newspapers (the "Milwaukie Herald"), movie theaters (the "Oregonian" Theater), department stores ( Sears & Roebuck) and other businesses. That same year also saw the opening of Interstate 5 through Milwaukie; when finished it generated much economic growth for the village as people moved away from agriculture towards new businesses such as construction companies or service industries such as trucking services or manufacturing plants. In recent years there has been some effort to revive downtown Milwaukee by restoring historic buildings along First Street between Morrison Avenue and Salmon Street while also creating new restaurants within walking distance of most residents' homes on Third Avenue between Morrison Avenue and Glisan Boulevard. These efforts have led to increased tourism for both locals and visitors who appreciate how revitalized downtown MILWAUKIEE feels despite having only 891 residents compared to over 20,000 people living within5 miles of any major city center in Oregon during this time period!
