Milwaukie, Oregon is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 27,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Milwaukie's history dates back to 1855 when it was founded as a small town on thewest side of the Willamette River by Pacific Northwest fur traders and Pioneer families. The first post office in Milwaukie was established in 1856 and the first store opened in 1857. In 1886, Milwaukie became an incorporated town with a population of about 350 people. The city annexed neighboring towns of La Grande and Meadowview in 1903 and 1907 respectively. Most notably during World War II, Japanese American prisoners-of-war were held here during World War II until they were liberated by U.S. troops on April 12, 1945. Milwaukie is a city located in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 29,314 at the 2010 census. The name Milwaukie is derived from the two words "mila" and "wuahi", meaning 'milky way' and 'southwest', respectively. The first settler in what is now Milwaukie was Hiram Bingham on January 17, 1847. He built a log cabin on a bend in the Willamette River. The next year, he married Maria Smith and together they founded the town of Milwaukie on February 12, 1848. They named their town for Captain James Cook's first voyage around the world which had landed in Australia about that time. In 1850, John Wesley Sell became one of First National Bank's directors and served as its president from 1870 to 1872. He also helped found Friends Meeting House (now known as Friendship United Methodist Church) in Milwaukie in 1850. In 1852, he married Anna Ladd and they founded another church called Christ Episcopal Church near where Milwaukie currently stands. This church still meets today inside Friends Meeting House on NE 4th Ave between SW 2nd St & NW 3rd St within walking distance of most businesses including Starbucks! In 1863-1864, General David Dixon fought with Sherman's army during the American Civil War at Battle Of Neuse River Bridge over which he lost an arm – this event is commemorated by a statue of General Dixon overlooking downtown Milwaukie fenced off with Confederate veteran tents memorialized nearby! Nearby on NE 1st Ave there are several shopping centers dotting Interstate 5 but no restaurants or bars so it's usually pretty quiet at night except for periodic howls from various dog walkers taking advantage of free parking lots adjacent to I-5! This was actually my favorite place to live growing up because it never rained all summer long like everyone else did back then so you could go outside without getting wetter than your clothes! And if it rained you knew to bring an umbrella because even though water droplets might size up small enough to look like raindrops at first glance they can really fill up big time when landing on any surface - especially concrete!
