The name of the town comes from an Indian word meaning "place where two rivers meet." The first permanent settlement in Medford was made by Captain William Clark during his exploration of the Columbia River in 1807. He and his party were the first Europeans to explore this area. In 1829, James Kapp founded a ferry across the Willamette River from present-day Portland to Medford because he thought it would be easy for goods to be transported between these two towns. This early transportation connection helped make Medford one of the most important communities on the river system. In 1837, Lewis and Clark traveled through Multnomah County and stopped at what is now Medford on their way downriver to explored new territory on both sides of the river. They left behind journals that provide a unique glimpse into American history at this time. These journals were later published as "Journey overland from California to points eastward" by Lewis and Clark Expedition (1844). During World War II, Medford played an important role as a training ground for troops fighting in Europe and Asia.
