Medford, Oregon is a town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the eastern side of the Medford River. The population was 37 at the 2010 census, which makes it one of the smallest in Oregon. The town of Medford was founded by George Washington Smith in 1847, and it grew quickly because of its location on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1856, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing the erection of a military post at Medford to support U.S. forces in Oregon during the Mexican-American War. The post was called Fort Hall and it served as a base for troops involved in fighting against Mexico. In 1865, Fort Hall was destroyed by a fire, and Medford became an agricultural center. In 1920, the United States Postal Service established an office at Medford to provide mail service to residents of Oregon.
