In 1847, General Daniel Webster ordered Major George Vancouver to explore what would become Oregon Territory. On July 5th, 1847, Vancouver arrived at Fort Stevens northwest of present-day Medford with his detachment of about 50 men led by Lt.-Colonel William Halsey Harper. They spent several weeks exploring areas that would eventually be part ofMedford including what are now Albany Park on the north end and Northgate Shopping Center on the south end today's east side of Interstate 5 just eastofpresent-day Southeast Side Street When they returned their report to Washington they recommended that a new settlement be established near Mount Washington because there were no suitable sites nearerPAULINVILLE west of Portland or Gresham on the eastern side On October 15th Colonel Harper sent Lieutenant James McDougall with 8 men under command to purchase land atwhat is now Gulf View Avenue between SW 4th & SW 5th Streets from Samuel Atherton for $550 dollars Meanwhile Major Vancouver set up camp at what is now NW 3rd Place . He appointed Mr .McDougall supervisor over all proceedings with authority over every family including women who worked in agriculture Mrs .Vancouver kept house for her husband . On November 3rd warrants were issued for search Warrants No 1 & 2 authorizing individuals unknown but probably James McDougall or John McIntosh were also wanted In less than two months after arriving inOregon Captain McCloughll had laid out four blocks wide streets main thoroughfare around block center sqr w/ houses built right off themountWashington had been renamed as MEDFORD after generalWebster himself On February 17th 1848 a vote was held to changethe name fromMountWashington toMEDFORD while everyone Present removed their hats before reciting Shakespeare’s play “Henry V” Afterward Drinks were served Filled with Old Cloaks which we thought peculiar until we found out they did itto represent Boston Tea Party not British soldiers
