Medford, Oregon is a town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and is home to the University of Oregon. The town was founded by Captain John Settle in 1851 as a sawmill settlement, but it wasn't until 1859 that it became an incorporated community. Medford's first courthouse was built in 1872 and its first school was opened in 1876. The population of Medford peaked at 35,000 in 1910, but has since been declining steadily. Today, there are only 10 residents living within the town limits. The history of Medford begins with its namesake: Captain John Settle. He arrived in Oregon on September 20, 1851, after spending several years traveling through the Western United States looking for a new home for his family. Upon reaching Portland, Settle began construction on what would become his final frontier settlement: Medford. initial efforts were modest; Settle simply requested $2 from each citizen he met to help finance his new colony- this gesture would go on to be repeated many times over the next few years. Settle's optimistic vision forMEDFORD soon caught fire and quickly spread throughout the area; by 1861, local merchants had donated enough materials and labor to begin construction on what would eventually become one of America's largest sawmills (later renamed The Oregons Sawmill Company). By 1865, MEDFORD had reached its full potential as a mill town; businesses both small and large were starting up all over the valley - including such stalwarts as The Jardine Paper Mill andPortland Manufacturing Company- creating what can only be described as an "industrial utopia." One key player behind MEDFORD's growth during these early years was Frederick Wistar Sellman- owner of The Jardine Paper Mill. Sellman invested heavily into paper production shortly after arriving inOregon, helping to spur economic development within MEDFORD while also establishing himself as one of Oregon's most influential businessmen/ entrepreneurs.. In later years Sellman would come to regret not taking advantage of railroads available throughout NorthwestAmerica during this time period- instead preferring to develop land himself instead- leading Toeppen & Sons Inc., one of ORANGE COUNTY'S FIRST BUSINESSES In 1870sMedford enjoyed unprecedented prosperity thanks to increased lumber sales generated by US lumber companies such as Pacific Lumber (then Peabody), Astoria Lumber & Timber Co., Eastern Lumber Co., Clackamas & Multnomah Lumber Co., etc...
