Medford is a city in the Portland metropolitan area, located on the Willamette River. The population of Medford was 97,531 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Oregon and one of its largest cities by land area. The first European to visit what is now Medford was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1825, British surveyor George Vancouver mapping the coast of Oregon noted an encampment of Native Americans near present-day Medford. When he explored that area more closely, he found that they were using a river as their water supply and providing game for their people. He named this spot Fort Vancouver after his commanding general in Canada, General Sir Alexander Cochrane. In 1843, Ulysses S. Grant erected a small wooden lighthouse at Point Defiance Beacon just upstream from today's downtown core to help guide vessels navigating the Great Western Canal across the Columbia River Gorge during construction of that canal's main span from Portland to Seattle. This became known as "The Lighthouse at PointDefiance" or simply "Lighthouse". In 1865, John Crampton founded Crampton & Company lumberyard on what are now North Fourth and West Sixth Streets in what later became part of downtown Medfordheights neighborhoods north of Interstate 5 and east of North King Street NW; Crampton also developed an adjacent millrace within today's Diner Row neighborhood south of I-5 and west of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Jr.'s home on Euclid Avenue NW (now Demeter Place NW). The company built many mills along the Willamette River between 1865-1920; some remain standing while others have been demolished or converted into housing developments. In 1907 when it merged with Northern Pacific Railroad (then part of Chicago Railway Company), Medford became one of four communities served by Northwestern Pacific Railroad's Sammamish Depot on SW Morrison Street in downtown Portland; passenger trains stopped here until 1960 when all Amtrak service moved to Beaverton/Portland Station instead. On July 1, 1990, Oregon Proposition 99 passed overwhelmingly legalizing same-sex marriage throughout Oregon without any local public referendum required under state law; however because same-sex marriages had not yet been legalized in other states neighboringOregon until then (California having already done so on February 24th), much discussion about how best to handle wedding planning ensued as well as concern about how open such weddings would be given statewide disapproval ratings for gay marriage caused by high levels among registered voters for both sides relative to overall voter turnout numbers for election year 1990 overall ($27 million vs $2 billion). Medford, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Lincoln County. The population was 54,527 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Oregon after Portland and Eugene. It is located on the Willamette River between Salem andPortland, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Salem and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Seattle. At one time, Medford was home to more than 100 thousand people before its growth began to slow in the 1990s as a result of suburban development around it. Today,Medford remains a vibrant cultural and economic center with many commercial businesses and restaurants along Main Street. The history of Medford can be traced back to 1853 when farmers near what is now town founded a village named Medford on land that today includes much of downtown Medford. The first post office opened in 1857, but due to lack of resources or interest from residents, mail continued to be sent from Quincy until 1861 when it was moved to Portland then finally Springfield. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was sworn into office as President at Fort Vancouver on what is now Pioneer Square; he stopped over night at an encampment nearby for supplies before continuing his journey northward through present day Medford. A few years later Jedediah Smith explored this area near present day downtown Medford while travelling through central Oregon; he reported discovering what would become known as the Klickitat Massacre Site which led him to rename the area "Oregon" in honor of George Washington's army unit stationed there during that time In 1872 various investors pooled their money together and bought 4 square miles (10 square kilometers) east of where downtown sits today for $3 per acre ($16 per hectare). This site became known as "Northwest settlement". From here they developed small farms with irrigation systems until they could build big enough homesteads for their families – something that wasn't possible without access to water which they would need hauled in by oxcart from distant springs or reservoirs By 1907 many residents were employed by John Denton & Sons Manufacturing Company who had built a large factory on Northwest settlement just south of town limits When World War I began production at Denton’s plant grew even faster thanks largely to new technology born out of WWI called synthetic rubber: tires were being made not only for cars but also for soldiers’ feet Some 1 million pairs were exported duringWWI In 1922 Northwest settlement merged with other townships within Lincoln County creating what we know as “Milton Township” . The name change came about because Milton had been proposed by provisional governor Burt Ostrom while serving as mayor pro temporeof Portland . With railroads running right through town Limits changed again with incorporation occurring on July 1st 1912 when citizens voted 38-1 in favor Of incorporation becoming official under “the lawrence amendment act 1911” effective September 8th 1912
The city of Medford was founded by Captain George Vancouver in 1797, and it became an important port on the Pacific Northwest. The city experienced a boom during the 1800s, thanks to its natural resources and its location on the Columbia River. In 1853, Medford was renamed Portland after General NathanielPortland.
