On the evening of October 1, 1903, an American inventor named George Eastman submitted to US Patent No. 2,521,866 a design for a gun laser that he had conceived while working on a new type of hand-held weapon. The patent was granted two months later and became known as the "Eastman Laser." The first successful use of the laser in combat took place on October 16, 1903 when Adm. James F. Byrd Jr., commander of the United States Naval Forces at Hong Kong used it to shoot down an Italian aircraft over Canton Bay.
