Medford, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon with a population of over 120,000 people. It is the county seat of Clackamas County and was founded on December 12, 1887 by John W. The name "Medford" is derived from an early Euro-American settlement which was located along the Willamette River between present day Salem and Portland. The first permanent settler in what would become Medford was John Witherspoon who arrived in 1792 on horseback from British Columbia after concluding a fur trading agreement with the Rogue River Indians. He named his new land either "Widomax" or "Weyburne" after two local settlers who had helped him find land near where he now stands: George Weyer and Jacob Tealock. In 1821, Drury erected the first houses in what would later be called Medford when he purchased 640 acres (247 ha) near present day downtown from Abel Tasman for $5 per acre ($40/ha). By 1828, over 60 dwellings were inhabitant within what would become known as town center due to its growing commerce and industry including lumber mills, pottery manufacturing, wheat farming, livestock grazing and mining; sawmilling also took place here at this time especially around milepost 15 on the old stagecoach route linking Portland with Sacramento via Eugene and Bend
