In 1951, Medford became home to Huntingdon Armory which produced assault rifles for both law enforcement officers and civilians until 1982 when it merged with McMillan Tactical Systems Incorporated to become McMillan Defense LLC. This event marks not only the end of handgun manufacturing but also rifle production at Huntingdon Armory; however, handguns still continue to be manufactured at this facility today as well as other Advanced Armaments Division manufacturing locations throughout Oregon.

The first post office in Medford was established on July 20, 1860, and remained open until it was discontinued on November 1, 1865. The first store in Medford was built by J.H. Coxe and Wm. Heydenberger on December 3, 1861. The initial population of Medford was just over 100 people; however, the town grew rapidly and reached a peak population of 1,500 people by 1870. By 1880, the population had declined to fewer than 500 people due to development within the boundaries of present-day Medford city limits (the southeast corner of what is now Willamette Street and State Street). During World War I (1914-18), Medford served as an important munitions dump for the United States military; during that time it became one of the most heavily bombed towns in America with damage totaling $60 million. In 1955-1956 voters passed a resolution requesting that the name be changed from "Medford" to "Oregon City". Despite being proposed by several city officials at different times throughout history - including then-Mayor George Dalles - nothing ever happened to change the name until 1956 when a new vote resulted in it becoming "Oregon City". In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within downtown Oregon City west of First Street between Swenson Boulevard and Interstate 585/USwy 99W; this area has seen some high-rise developments such as One Portland Center (formerly known as Crystal Tower), Westin Hotel/Residence Inn Northwest Portland International Airport Nordstrom Rack & Shops (), Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum (), MAX Light Rail Station (formerly called Hood River Transit Depot) () – all while preserving much evidence associated with early Oregon City growth such as pioneer houses dating back to 1859 and Territorial Jail cells from 1862 which are still used today as part of MAX Green Line stations Pioneer Courthouse Square () – home to both Salem District Courtrooms () – also housing Salem District Courtrooms' Annex Building (), courthouse annex building adjacent northeast side property owned by Multnomah County encompasses jail cells used prior to secession from Oregon
